Learn how to search for specific comments or view all comments in WebDewey.

Search for specific comments

  1. On any screen, click the Comments button in the header.
  2. On the Comments screen, in the Search for box, enter one or more terms. Separate terms with a single space.
    Search features:
    • Expand terms to include variant forms using truncation (right or left) or wildcards (character masking).
    • Combine terms with Boolean and, or, or not operators. Spaces between terms are treated as and operators.

  3. In the box to the right of the entry box:
    • Select an index from the list.
      Or
    • Keep the default setting All to search all fields in the comments.
  4. (Optional) Limit search by type of comment (requires site license).

    In the rightmost box (labeled of type), select either user or institution, or keep the default setting (All).

     Note: If you have a single-user license, the option is not available.

  5. (Optional) Select the Retain Search check box to preserve the search term, selected index, and selected type for reuse.
  6. Click Search or press <Enter>.

List all comments for your library

  1. On any screen, click the Comments button in the header.
  2. On the Comments screen, leave the Search for box empty.
  3. Click Search or press <Enter>. In the Search Results area, the system displays a list of all comments in your library's Comments database.

Comments indexes

Index Fields Example Tips/Purpose
All Fields All fields/data included in all indexes of the Dewey comments database fiction Improve results when a search on another index produces too few hits. Find all occurrences of a term in the comments database.
Dewey Number DDC numbers (from schedules, tables, or manual) that associate a user comment with the DDC record to which it applies 660 Find all comments associated with a specific DDC number. Use truncation to match all DDC numbers that begin with the same sequence of digits. Not all comments are associated with DDC numbers. The DDC number field is not required.
Keyword Keywords supplied by the creator or editor of a user comment bibliograph* Find a comment by searching for term(s) that describe the topic you want. Not all comments include keywords. The Keywords field is not required.
Title Words and Dewey numbers in the titles of comments electronic book Find a comment when you know the title or part of the title. Determine whether a term is part of the title of an existing user comment.
Note Words and Dewey numbers in the Comment fields of comments cutter* Find occurrences of term(s) for the topic you want in the body of a user comment.

Single comment Content in all fields.
Multiple comments Listed in ascending order by Dewey number. Comments without Dewey numbers precede others.

Each entry contains the Dewey number, title, and type.

Entry numbers (left column) are hyperlinked to the full comment.
No comments retrieved Displays the message 0 results found.

(Opens the Search History window)
  • View a list of 30 previous search and/or browse actions, including the terms and indexes.
  • Repeat a previous search or browse
  • Revise a previous search or browse and then reuse it:
  • Click Clear History to delete the list.
  • Click Close to close the window.
Notes:
  • The search history is associated with your authorization number and is retained between sessions. The search history is not cleared when you log off.
  • A single search history contains all search or browse actions; the system does not maintain separate lists for searches and browse queries.
  • Comments searches. Searches in the Comments database are also included in the single search history list.
