User requirements
Install the Label Program
You need local administrator privileges when you install to allow the Label Program to update the necessary system files.
Run the Label Program
You must be a Power User to retain and modify settings and other program files system-wide.
The Label Program is not needed for the OCLC Connexion client
If you use the Windows-based client interface to OCLC Connexion, you do not need to install the Label Program. The Connexion client provides the same functions as the Label Program for viewing, editing, and printing labels, but as part of the software itself (go to the View menu and click Label or go to the File menu and click Print Label(s)). See Print Labels in Connexion client documentation for instructions.
Before installing
- Close any open applications on your workstation before installing the Label Program, including any Virus Protection programs.
- Check to be sure you meet user requirements.
Upgrade or reinstall
To upgrade or reinstall the Label Program, you do not need to uninstall the previous version first. The Setup Maintenance program installs the Label Program over an existing version. In step 4 above, select one of the following:
- Modify – Click to select and add or remove individual program components to install. The Label Program keeps your existing settings for label formats and printing.
- Repair (recommended for most users) – Click to reinstall all of the new program upgrades. The Label Program keeps all of your existing settings.
- Remove – Click only if you need to uninstall the Label Program. Your existing settings are lost. For more on uninstalling, see Uninstall the Label Program.
Download installation files
The following detailed procedure is for new users.
- Create a temporary folder in Windows Explorer (e.g., create a folder named Label in the x:\temp folder, where x is the letter of your hard drive).
- Navigate to Cataloging software downloads and review the OCLC software download terms and conditions.
- Click I accept to accept the Terms and Conditions.
Note: This step is required. Links to software and instructions are not active until you indicate that you accept the Terms and Conditions. - Navigate to the Cataloging Label Program section of the page.
- Click the Cataloging Label Program 1.22.exe file.
- From the Save As dialog box, locate and select the temporary folder you created. The name of the downloaded file automatically appears in the File name box. It is a self-extracting compressed file with the file name extension *.exe.
- Click Save.
Note: The time taken to download software can vary, depending on the size of the file and the speed of your connection. - From the Windows Explorer, locate the temporary folder and double-click the *.exe file to extract the files. In the Win-Zip Self Extractor window, click Unzip.
- Click OK and then click Close.
Install the Label Program from the downloaded files
Before installing the Label Program:
- Close any open applications on your workstation before installing the Label Program, including any Virus Protection programs.
- Check to be sure you meet user requirements.
The following detailed procedure is for new users.
- In the temporary folder containing the unzipped installation files (see step 11 in the procedure above), double-click Setup.exe.
- If you are installing the Label Program for the first time, a Setup program opens. Complete the remaining steps.
- If you are upgrading or reinstalling, a Maintenance program may open. Click Repair and skip to step 11 in this procedure.
- Click Next in the Welcome screen of the Setup program.
- Click Yes to accept the license agreement.
- On the Choose Destination Location screen, check the drive and folder shown under Destination Directory (default: \oclcapps). To change the drive or folder, click Browse. Use the Choose Folder dialog box to change the location. If you create a new directory, click Yes to confirm, and then click OK.
Note: Avoid installing the Label Program in a directory with spaces in its name. Directory names that include spaces can hinder the startup of the Label Program.
- Click Next.
- On the Setup Type screen, choose a setup type.
- Typical (recommended for most users)
- Compact – Select if you need to save hard disk space. If selected, the TourGuide is not installed.
- Custom – Select if you need to install or reinstall parts of the program and then select an installation destination.
- Click Next.
- On the Select Folder for Program Icons screen, select the default: OCLC Applications. This is the name under which you open the program from the Windows Start menu. To use a different name, highlight a name in the list or enter a new name.
- Click Next.
- On the Start Copying Files screen, check the installation settings in the Current Settings box, and click Next to start copying files.
(Optional) To review or change a setting, click Back until you return to the correct screen. When ready, click Next to continue. The setup program copies files to the location you specified, creates a Start menu item, and places a shortcut Label Program icon on the desktop. - On the Install Shield Wizard Complete screen, the Label Program may ask if you want to shut down and restart the workstation or restart later.
- If you do not get this prompt, click Finish. Installation is complete.
- If you get this prompt and want to restart your workstation, accept the default Yes and click Finish.
- If you do not want to restart your workstation immediately, select No and click Finish.
Note: If you get this prompt, OCLC recommends that you restart the workstation before running the Label Program. After the workstation restarts, you are ready to use the Labels Program.
- (Optional) You may now delete the installation files you downloaded from the Web.
- Locate and right-click the temporary folder you created (example name: \label).
- On the shortcut menu, click Delete.
Uninstall the Label Program (not required)
Although you are not required to uninstall the Label Program before reinstalling or upgrading the software, the program includes a Remove option. To uninstall:

Or - Run the Setup program as you did when you installed the Label Program, select the button for Remove, and follow prompts to uninstall.
