Receiving the error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

Symptom
  • Project Client error message that "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" when ingesting multiple PDFs as compound objects

Resolution

The most common cause of this error is when attempting to ingest multiple PDFs via Object List from a tab-delimited file while Convert PDF to compound object is turned on in the Project Settings Manager. Attempting to ingest smaller batches of PDF files or ingesting them one at a time is the only way to work around this limitation in the Project Client.

Additional troubleshooting steps if the above does not prevent this error:

  1. Reboot the computer to attempt to clear memory.
  2. Attempt to ingest again, and if the same error is received contact OCLC Support for additional assistance
