Recalls (with Alma and NCIP)

Learn how to recall items as a requesting or supplying library in Relais ILL.

Overview

If your library uses Alma and is using NCIP for interoperability between Relais and Alma then it is also possible to use the following workflows to process recalls.

  • For requests initiated by your patrons, and an item supplied from another library is loaned to your patron, if the supplying library sends a recall then the patron can be notified through Primo/Alma.
  • For requests from other libraries and your library supplies a loan, if a patron issues a recall through Primo this is passed through to Relais automatically so that a Recall message can be sent to the requesting library.

Note: Please also refer to the following information from ExLibris when setting up and using this feature: https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/@api/deki/files/47581/Broker_Resource_Sharing_-_Recall.mp4

In the following scenarios, the library using Relais is also using Alma/Primo as their local system and is using NCIP to send messages between Relais and Alma.

As the requesting library

Requesting library Supplying library
Actions in Relais Actions in Primo/Alma
A patron from your library submits a request which is then sent to another library to be filled, when the item is received staff update the request in Relais as a loan to your patron.  With NCIP in use the patron can checkout the item and see the loan in Primo.

See Loan an item for more information on this process.

Sends a Recall notice (via ISO or generic script or outside Relais)
Relais receives the Recall notice and sends an NCIP RecallItem message to Alma.

If it is a multi-volume loan, then a RecallItem message is sent for each volume.

Alma sends an NCIP RecallItem response to Relais acknowledging receipt of the message.
Alma notifies the patron that the item on loan to them has been recalled and must be returned.
