WorldCat Validation release notes, September 2021

Introduction

This release of changes to WorldCat Validation involves the following new features, enhancements, and bug fixes.

  • New Features and Enhancements:
    • OCLC-MARC Validations of New MARC Codes Announced April-July 2021.
    • MARC 21 Bibliographic Update No. 32 (announced June 2021).
    • MARC 21 Authority Update No. 32 (announced June 2021) to the Validation Rule Set that Includes All Valid Elements of MARC 21 Authority Format.
    • MARC 21 Holdings Update No. 32 (announced June 2021).
  • Bug Fixes
    • Correction of GTIN-14 Validation in Bibliographic, Authority, and Holdings fields 024.
    • Alignment of Bibliographic Field 956 with Field 856.

These enhancements and fixes are the result of announcements of new MARC elements and codes by the Library of Congress as well as feedback and requests from members of the OCLC cooperative.

OCLC-MARC Validations of New MARC Codes Announced April-July 2021

You may now use all new MARC Codes announced by the Library of Congress in the following LC Technical Notices:

Classification Scheme Source Codes

The following source codes have been added to the Classification Scheme Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

  • fivr - FIV-Regionalklassifikation / Fachinformationsverbund Internationale Beziehungen und Länderkunde. Berlin
  • fivs - FIV-Sachklassifikation / Fachinformationsverbund Internationale Beziehungen und Länderkunde. Berlin
  • iconclass - Iconclass (http://www.iconclass.org/)

Description Convention Source Codes

The following source codes have been added to the Description Convention Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

  • dcrmr - Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (RDA Edition) (Chicago: Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries) (https://bsc.rbms.info/DCRMR/)

Genre/Form Code and Term Source Codes

The following source codes have been added to the Genre/Form Code and Term Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

MARC Authentication Action Code List

The following source code has been added to the MARC Authentication Action Code List for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

  • zdb - Zeitschriftendatenbank- Code "zdb" signifies that the record is part of the Zeitschriftendatenbank (German Union Catalogue of Serials) and that it was authenticated by a national curation team.

MARC Code List for Relators

The following relator has been added to the MARC Code List for Relators for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

  • pad [Place of address] - The place to which a resource is sent, for example, the place of the postal address of a letter.

Name and Title Authority Source Codes

The following source code has been added to the Name and Title Authority Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

  • dib - Dictionary of Irish Biography (DIB) (Dublin, Ireland: Royal Irish Academy)

Standard Identifier Source Codes

The following source codes have been added to the Standard Identifier Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

Subject Heading and Term Source Codes

The following source codes have been added to the Subject Heading and Term Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

MARC 21 Bibliographic Update No. 32 (announced June 2021)

You may now begin to use the following changes to Bibliographic elements implemented as part of OCLC-MARC Bibliographic Update for September 2021, based on the MARC 21 Bibliographic format changes announced in MARC 21 Bibliographic Update No. 32 (June 2021):

  • In Bibliographic Continuing Resources elements 008/21 and 006/04 (Type of Continuing Resource), existing values “d” (Updating Database), “p” (Periodical), and “w” (Updating Web Site) have been redescribed in order to accommodate the newly defined values “g” (Magazine), “h” (Blog), “j” (Journal), “r” (Repository), “s” (Newsletter), and “t” (Directory).
  • In Bibliographic field 022 (International Standard Serial Number), new subfields $0 (Authority Record Control Number or Standard Number) and $1 (Real World Object URI) have been defined.
  • In Bibliographic field 046 (Special Coded Dates), the new First Indicator (Type of Entity) and new subfields $x (Nonpublic Note), $z (Public Notes), and $3 (Materials Specified) have been defined.
  • In Bibliographic field 082 (Dewey Decimal Classification Number), there have been revisions to the definitions for the field, First Indicator value “7” (Other Edition Specified in Subfield $2), subfield $m (Standard Optional Designation), subfield $2 (Edition Information), and some examples.
  • In Bibliographic field 083 (Additional Dewey Decimal Classification Number), there have been revisions to the definitions for the field, First Indicator value “7” (Other Edition Specified in Subfield $2), subfield $m (Standard Optional Designation), subfield $2 (Edition Information), and some examples.
  • New Bibliographic field 334 (Mode of Issuance) has been defined.
  • In Bibliographic field 344 (Sound Characteristics), there have been revisions to the definition for the field and new subfield $i (Sound Content) has been defined.
  • In Bibliographic field 348 (now renamed to Notated Music Characteristics, formerly Format of Notated Music), there have been revisions to the definition of the field, subfield $2 (Source of Term), and some examples, and new subfields $c (Form of Musical Notation Term) and $d (Form of Musical Notation Code) have been defined.
  • New Bibliographic field 353 (Supplementary Content Characteristics) has been defined.
  • In Bibliographic field 383 (Numeric Designation of Musical Work), there have been revisions to the definition of subfield $a (Serial Number).
  • In Bibliographic field 546 (Language Note), there have been revisions to the definition for the field and subfield $b (Information Code or Alphabet).
  • In Bibliographic field 852 (Location), there have been revisions to the definition of First Indicator value “1” (Dewey Decimal Classification).

MARC 21 Authority Update No. 32 (announced June 2021) to the Validation Rule Set that Includes All Valid Elements of MARC 21 Authority Format

You may now begin to use the following changes to Authority elements implemented as part of OCLC-MARC Authority Update for September 2021, based on the MARC 21 Authority format changes announced in MARC 21 Authority Update No. 32 (June 2021).

 Note: These changes apply only to the OCLC-MARC Authority validation rule set that includes all valid elements of MARC 21 Authority Format and cannot be used in the LC/NACO Authority File.

  • In Authority field 022 (International Standard Serial Number), new subfields $0 (Authority Record Control Number or Standard Number) and $1 (Real World Object URI) have been defined.
  • In Authority field 046 (Special Coded Dates), new subfields $x (Nonpublic Note), $z (Public Notes), and $3 (Materials Specified) have been defined.
  • In Authority field 082 (Dewey Decimal Classification Number), there have been revisions to the definitions for the field, First Indicator value “7” (Other Edition Specified in Subfield $2), subfield $m (Standard Optional Designation), subfield $2 (Edition Information), and some examples.
  • In Authority field 083 (Additional Dewey Decimal Classification Number), there have been revisions to the definitions for the field, First Indicator value “7” (Other Edition Specified in Subfield $2), subfield $2 (Edition Information), and some examples.
  • In Authority field 383 (Numeric Designation of Musical Work), there have been revisions to the definition of subfield $a (Serial Number).

Name Authority Cooperative (NACO) participants should not use these authority format changes in the LC/NACO Authority File at this time. The Library of Congress and OCLC will announce the implementation of these elements for use in name and subject authority records in the LC/NACO Authority File at a future date.

MARC 21 Holdings Update No. 32 (announced June 2021)

You may now begin to use the following changes to Holdings elements implemented as part of OCLC-MARC Holdings Update for September 2021, based on the MARC 21 Holdings format changes announced in MARC 21 Holdings Update No. 32 (June 2021):

  • In Holdings field 852 (Location), there have been revisions to the definition of First Indicator value “1” (Dewey Decimal Classification).
  • In Holdings fields 853-855 (Captions and Pattern), there have been revisions to the definitions of subfields $a-$h (Enumeration Captions) and subfields $i-$m (Chronology Captions).  In WorldCat, these changes have already been implemented, as documented in WorldCat Validation Release Notes, April 2020.
  • In Holdings fields 863-865 (Enumeration and Chronology), there have been revisions to the definitions of subfields $a-$h (Enumeration Captions) and subfields $i-$m (Chronology Captions).  In WorldCat, these changes have already been implemented, as documented in WorldCat Validation Release Notes, April 2020.

Bug fixes

Correction of GTIN-14 Validation in Bibliographic, Authority, and Holdings fields 024

You may now validate a correctly formatted Global Trade Identification Number (GTIN-14) in the Bibliographic, Authority, and Holdings fields 024 with First Indicator value 7 and the presence of subfield $2 value "gtin-14".  The structure and validation of the GTIN-14 are described on the GTIN website (http://www.gtin.info/).  Previously, the GTIN-14 was not being correctly checked for validity.

Alignment of Bibliographic Field 956 with Field 856

OCLC-defined Bibliographic field 956 (Local Electronic Location and Access) has been brought into full alignment with Bibliographic field 856 (Electronic Location and Access) with the definition of new subfields $7 (Access Status) and $8 (Field Link and Sequence Number), plus the removal of obsolete subfields $b (Access Number), $h (Processor of Request), $i (Instruction), $j (Bits Per Second), $k (Password), $l (Logon), $n (Name of Location of Host), $r (Settings), and $t (Terminal Emulation).
