Manage Metadata properties
Learn how to edit and delete Metadata properties in CONTENTdm (new version).
Edit property
Roles: Users with the Administrator or Collection manager role can edit metadata properties. Refer to CONTENTdm (new version) roles.
To edit a property:
- Select the Pencil icon
under the Actions column in the row for the property to be edited. Or you can click the property name, then click Edit on the property screen. - On the Edit metadata property screen, edit the below fields:
- Property name
- Select the Definition from the drop-down list. Refer to Definitions for more information.
- Optional. Add Constraints. Options include:
- Vocabulary: This property is constrained to a specific vocabulary. Select the vocabulary to use for the property. Refer to Manage vocabularies for more information. Managed options include:
- DCMI Type Vocabulary
- FAST Corporate Names
- FAST Event
- FAST Form
- FAST Geographic
- FAST Meeting
- FAST Personal Names
- FAST Topic
- FAST Uniform Titles

- WorldCat Entities - Person
Notes: To add additional custom vocabularies, refer to Controlled vocabularies.- If the property is constrained by more than one vocabulary, you will first see results from the first vocabulary selected.
- Date:This property is constrained by date.
- If no Constraints are selected, the property will be a text entry field.
- Vocabulary: This property is constrained to a specific vocabulary. Select the vocabulary to use for the property. Refer to Manage vocabularies for more information. Managed options include:
- Determine whether the property is Required, Publicly Viewable, or Publicly Searchable by toggling the respective option.
- Click Save.
Note: The settings selected on the property under Metadata properties can be overwritten on a template-by-template basis. Refer to Metadata templates.
Delete property
Roles: Users with the Administrator or Collection manager role can delete metadata properties. Refer to CONTENTdm (new version) roles.
- Select the trash can icon
under the Actions column in the row for the property to be deleted. - A confirmation screen will appear, alerting you to the number of collections currently using the property.
- Click Delete to confirm deletion or Cancel to retain the property.
Note: The Title, Transcript, and Alt Text properties cannot be deleted.
