Asked to authenticate when using FirstSearch "Cite this Item" feature

Symptom

  • When viewing an item in FirstSearch and clicking Cite This Item, you get an "Authentication Required" prompt. It says "You are trying to access content in a databae that requires authentication."

Applies to

  • FirstSearch

Resolution

The Cite This Item feature redirects the user to WorldCat.org. The user is then asked if they would like to be redirected to your library's WorldCat Discovery instance. If so, they may see an authentication prompt. The browser remembers the user's selection from previous sessions, so they may not see the first prompt. To prevent the authentication prompt from appearing, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to OCLC Service Configuration (worldcat.org/config) > WorldCat Discovery and WorldCat Local > User Interface Options > Your WorldCat.org URL.
  2. Uncheck the box for Redirect users from open WorldCat.org to your institution's WorldCat instance.
