How to do a hand-install of the Label program on x64 Windows

These instructions are included in a readme file that is part of the manual-install archive attached to this troubleshooting document.

NOTE: when using this manual-install process, make sure you're installing it on x64 (64-bit) Windows.

 

This document addresses

The Label program cannot be installed on 64-bit Windows due to an install error or restriction that can't be resolved.

 

To get around the problem, we're going to do a 'hand-install' of the Label program.  That is, we're going to take an already installed Label program and manually copy files and shortcuts into place like the installer would.  Then we're going to run a couple registry files to add the OCLC key and register two OCXs.  Lastly, we're going to run OCLCPermissions to set all permissions just like we would after a normal install.

 

The attached zip archive containing everything we need has the following files

  • OCLC Applications (Shortcut folder)
  • How to do a hand-install of the Label program on x64 Windows Readme.txt (The document you're reading)
  • Label Program.lnk (Desktop shortcut)
  • LabelEditor.ocx
  • LabelPrinter.ocx
  • OCLCAPPS.zip (The installed Label program)
  • OCLCKey.reg (The OCLC registry key)
  • OCLCPermissions.exe (Program to set permissions after the Label program is hand-installed)
  • RegShot Register OCXs x64.reg (Registers the two OCX controls)

 

Let's get started

  1. Save or copy the X64 hand-install of the OCLC Cataloging Label program - instructions and files.zip file to your desktop (for convenience).
  2. Right-click the file and choose Extract All.
  3. Click the Extract button.  A folder with the same name will appear on the desktop.
  4. Double-click the newly created folder and you'll see the above listed files.
  5. Copy the OCLCAPPS.zip file to the root of your C: drive.
  6. Right-click the file and choose Extract All.
  7. Click the Extract button.  A folder called OCLCAPPS (containing the installed Label program) will appear on the C: drive.
  8. Delete the OCLCAPPS.zip file.

 

Next we're going to copy the two OCX files in place.  To do this

  1. Return to the desktop folder, highlight the LabelEditor.ocx and LabelPrinter.ocx files.  Right-click and choose Copy.
  2. Hold down the Windows key (to the left or right of the Alt key) and while holding it down, press the letter r; this brings up the Windows Run box.
  3. Type shell:SystemX86 (including the colon (:)) and press Enter.
  4. Press ctrl-v (paste) - If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.  The two OCX files should appear in the list.

Next, let's get the desktop icon and Start Menu shortcuts in place

  1. Return to the desktop folder, right-click the 'OCLC Applications' folder and choose Copy.
  2. Hold down the Windows key (to the left or right of the Alt key) and while holding it down, press the letter r; this brings up the Windows Run box.
  3. Type shell:Common Start Menu (including the colon (:)) and press Enter.
  4. Double-click the Programs folder.
  5. Press ctrl-v (paste) - If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.  The 'OCLC Applications' folder should appear in the list.

 

Now, let's get the desktop icon in place

  1. Return to the desktop folder, right-click the 'Label Program' shortcut and choose Copy.
  2. Hold down the Windows key (to the left or right of the Alt key) and while holding it down, press the letter r; this brings up the Windows Run box.
  3. Type shell:Common Desktop (including the colon (:)) and press Enter.
  4. Press ctrl-v (paste) - If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.  The Label program icon should appear in the list.

 

Now, we have two registry files to run

  1. Return to the desktop folder.
  2. Double-click the 'OCLCKey.reg' file.  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation and click Yes to the import message.
  3. Double-click the 'RegShot Register OCXs x64.reg' file.  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation and click Yes to the import message.

 

Last step - We need to set permissions for the newly installed Label program

  1. Right-click the desktop Label program icon and select Run as administrator.  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  2. After the Label program starts, close it (this step creates any missing files).
  3. Return to the desktop folder.
  4. Right-click OCLCPermissions.exe and select Run as administrator.  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  5. Click the 'Set Full Permissions' button.
  6. Verify the first six entries say Read-Write.

 

That's it!  You now have a fully functioning hand-installed version of the OCLC Cataloging Label program.

 

You may delete the 'X64 hand-install of the OCLC Cataloging Label program - instructions and files' desktop folder as we're done with it.

 

Additional information

If OCLCPermissions shows Not Installed for the top six entries, contact OCLC Support for help manually applying permissions.
