Yes, it is possible to convert monographs to multi-part items without losing existing holds or borrowing details if the item was originally received as a single monograph instead of a multi-part item.

Using OCLC WorldShare Record Manager, change the LHR from type x to type v and check other leader fields. In most cases you 'll be required to add 853/863 and fill $8 in the 876 fields.
