Adopt RDA in OLIB

It is straightforward to adopt RDA in OLIB:

  • Utilise OLIB's standard cataloguing features and underlying database
  • Utilise OLIB's RDA specific screen Layouts that present fields in accordance with the RDA list of attributes
  • Utilise the Layouts' RDA specific fields for entering RDA specific elements
  • Flag a record as Catalogued to RDA?

RDA layouts in OLIB

In Titles, when you select a Media Type, the Layouts drop down makes the appropriate RDA Layout available:

  • RDA (all materials other than Serials and Articles)
  • RDA Serials
  • RDA Articles

Sheets in the RDA layouts

The RDA Layouts include the following sheets:

Main - sheet for RDA

Abstract - sheet for RDA

Digital Resource Details - sheet for RDA

Admin Data - sheet for RDA

OPAC Information - sheet for RDA

MARC Details - standard sheet

Audit Trail - standard sheet

Note that a "sheet for RDA" can still be used in other cataloguing layouts if preferred.

Make RDA the default layout

If preferred, you can make any of the above RDA Layouts your default Layout for a given Media Type:

  1. Go to Titles.
  2. When viewing an existing record or if creating a new record, hover over Layouts at the top right of the screen.
  3. OLIB lists the relevant RDA layout depending on the Media Type of the current record: RDA, RDA Serials, RDA Articles.
  4. To make e.g. RDA the default, click the yellow star symbol.

The screen re-draws to display the chosen layout. Next time you view a record of this media type, OLIB will display it using your chosen RDA layout.

RDA cataloguing rules in use

If all your original cataloguing is to be RDA cataloguing, this can be set in OLIB Defaults.

  1. Go to System Administration> OLIB Defaults.
  2. Click to display the details. In Cataloguing Defaults set RDA Cataloguing Rules in Use to Yes.

It saves time when cataloguers create new titles, by causing the Catalogued to RDA? flag to be set automatically to Yes.

RDA data elements

A set of fields in OLIB exist to contain the data elements specific to RDA. These are reference data fields that contain values in keeping with the lists of fixed vocabularies maintained by the RDA Steering Committee.

To view these fields, go to Cataloguing Reference Data> Media Types.

Example: Books (BKM) Media Type

These are the values that appear when you create a new RDA Titles record -

RDA Defaults (Mode of Issuance and Tags 336, 337 and 338)
Default RDA Mode of Issuance single unit
Default RDA Content Type text
Default RDA Media Type [null]
Default RDA Carrier Type [null]

You can set default values in the Media Type and Media Sub-type records, so that, when you start a new record or when you change to a different media type or sub-type, the above fields will be set automatically.

The OLIB installation process sets appropriate RDA values in the Media Types domain but you can edit them.

RDA Field RDA definition Set for these OLIB Media Types
Mode of Issuance A categorisation reflecting whether a resource is issued in one or more parts, the way it is updated, and whether its termination is predetermined or not. This is flagged as a mandatory field on the new RDA screen.  BKM · BVOL · CART · DVD · LLEAF · SER · SISS · SREC · VREC · WWW
Content Type A categorisation reflecting the fundamental form of communication in which the content is expressed and the human sense through which it is intended to be perceived. This is flagged as a mandatory field on the new RDA screen. BKM · BVOL · CART · CHAP · LLEAF · LLFPT · SART · SER · SISS · SREC · TRACK · VREC
RDA Media Type  [Referred to in OLIB as the RDA Media Type to differentiate it from the OLIB media type] A categorisation reflecting the general type of intermediation device required to view, play, run, etc., the content of a resource. SREC · TRACK · VREC · WWW
Carrier Type A categorisation reflecting the format of the storage medium and housing of a carrier in combination with the type of intermediation device required to view, play, run, etc., the content of a resource.  SREC · TRACK · VREC · WWW

Note: there are also attributes for these fields in the Archive Titles domain. They are already present when you choose an RDA layout from the Layouts icon Layouts link.

Import and export RDA MARC records

The RDA fields are imported and exported to MARC as follows:

($b is the critical code field for the import/export; $a (etc) is generated from the value in $b by using the predefined, unchangeable, values delivered with OLIB)

RDA field Import/export behaviour
Catalogued To RDA? if this field is set to Yes, the MARC record will include a $e in the 040 tag. This subfield will be set to rda
Mode of Issuance this is not explicitly exported to the MARC record. The MARC export process will continue to populate Leader/07 and Leader/19 as before, to represent the mode of issuance
Content Type this will be imported/exported in 336 $b. Subfields $a and $0 will be generated during export from predefined data managed by OCLC
Media Type this will be imported/exported in 337 $b. Subfields $a and $0 will be generated during export from predefined data managed by OCLC
Carrier Type this will be imported/exported in 338 $b. Subfields $a and $0 will be generated during export from predefined data managed by OCLC
