How to use EZproxy or OpenAthens with the ILL request button in WorldCat Discovery

Symptom

  • You want off-campus users to be directed to sign in to your EZproxy or OpenAthens proxy service when they click on the ILL request button in WorldCat Discovery

Applies to

  • WorldCat Discovery
  • WorldShare Interlibrary Loan

Resolution

For libraries without WMS or Tipasa, the ILL request button in WorldCat Discovery requires IP authentication. Users off-campus will need to sign into a proxy service to authenticate via the IP address of the proxy server.

  1. Go to Service Configuration (worldcat.org/config) > OpenURL Resolvers > Manage Resolvers
  2. Find your WorldShare ILL Request Form OpenURL resolver in the list. Click Edit and then copy the OpenURL ID.
  3. Go to Service Configuration > IP Addresses > Manage IP Addresses.
  4. Click Add to enter the IP address of your proxy server.
  5. Then add the OpenURL Resolver ID to your IP address by clicking the + sign, choosing OpenURL Resolver ID, and entering the ID in the text box.
  6. Click Save.
  7. Go to Service Configuration > WorldCat Discovery and WorldCat Local > User Interface Options > Custom Links.
  8. Use Custom link 3 to configure the remote access login custom link.
Link type: Select remote access login
URL: Enter your library's proxy prefix URL
Check the box for Append current URL to the end of this link (Note: Certain OpenAthens setups may also require the checkbox for Encode URL before appending).
Display text: Enter text of your choice (ex. "Remote Access")
  9. Click Save Changes.

  10. Wait a few minutes before checking an item record to see if the proxy has been applied to the ILL button in Discovery.

  11. Test the ILL button on and off your campus network to confirm that it's working as expected.

  12. If you get an EZproxy or OpenAthens error when testing the ILL button, contact EZproxy or OpenAthens support, respectively.
