Saved Items and Personal Lists

Learn how to create and save items in personal lists in WorldCat Discovery.

Users can save up to 100 records in a list by clicking on the Save icon that appears next to the item. When users reach the limit, the interface displays a warning message indicated the list is full and records will need to be cleared in order to add additional items. Users can close the message and continue to search; however, they will not be able to add another record to the list until one or more records are removed.

 Note: Saved Items is a temporary list. If users intend to keep saved items, they must move the items to a new or existing list in order to keep them for a subsequent session. If a user logs out before moving these items to a personal list, then the items will be lost.

  • Privacy notice: If you are using a public computer and you leave the terminal, your list will be visible to others until the session times out.

Users can remove one record at a time by using the icon beside each record. Users can delete all records in the list by clicking Select All, then clicking the Delete icon.

Save items to a list

  1. Search for the items you would like to include in a list. 
  2. Click the Save icon to add an item to the list
  3. Optional. Use the Save items on page link to save all items from a single page of search results. 
  4. When finished, click Saved Items in the upper right corner to display the list.

To remove items from a list within the search results:

  1. Select the Saved icon on the individual results tile. The tile will revert to Save and the item no longer appears on the Saved Items list.
  2. Optional. Select the Remove saved items on page link to remove all items on the search results page from the Saved Items list.

Create and save a list

To create and save a list, first Sign in to WorldCat Discovery.

Once items have been saved, click the Saved Items link in the upper right corner to display the list.

  1. Click on the Create List icon.
  2. Provide a List Name (required) and List Description (optional).
  3. Toggle the Privacy option to select a Privacy preference. This option can be changed after the list has been saved. If a Shared list is changed to Private, the list content automatically becomes inaccessible to anyone with the original permalink.
    • Shared: A permalink is generated for others to view, site, and share the list. Changes to the list are updated in real-time after the page is refreshed.
    • Private: (Default). No permalink is created and the list is only visible to its creator.
  4. Click Save.

Clear items from a list

  1. Select individual items to be removed from the list or click the box to Select All Items.
  2. Click the Delete icon.
  3. A message opens to confirm this action.
  4. Click Delete Records to continue or Cancel to return to the list.

Saved Items list options

From the Saved Items list, library users can Email, Cite, and Move the saved items.

Email item(s)

From the list or saved item to be emailed:

  1. Click the Email icon. A Share List window appears.
  2. Enter up to five email addresses, separated by commas in the Email Address(es) field.
  3. Provide a Subject and (optional) Message (limit 500 characters).
  4. Click Share List. Your items or list will be sent.

Cite multiple items

From the list of saved items to be cited:

  1. Click the check box next to the items you want to create citations for or check the Select All box.
  2. Click the Cite icon. A Cite List window appears.
  3. Select the citation style. The citations appear in a Copy & Paste box.
  4. Export the citations by clicking on one of the Export options or copy and paste them from the text box.

Move items to a different list

From the saved list containing the desired items:

  1. Click the check box next to the items you want to move or select all by checking the Select All Items box.
  2. Click the Move icon.
  3. A Move Records window opens. Select the list to which you want to move the items.
  4. Click Select List.

Import lists from WorldCat.org to WorldCat Discovery

  1. Use your WorldCat credentials to log in to your existing account.
  2. Click a list name to view its details.
  3. Click the Export to CSV link.
  4. Save the file where you can find it later.
  5. Go to WorldCat Discovery and use your staff account to log on.
  6. Click your account name to display a drop-down list and select Saved lists.
  7. From the footer, select Import my lists.
  8. Provide a List Name (required) and List Description (optional).
  9. Click Browse to locate the file to be imported.
  10. Once the file is displayed, click Import List to begin the import process.
  11. Click Save.
  12. The list will be added to My Personal Lists. To view your lists, click on the My Account menu in the upper right corner and select Saved lists.
