Are there any restrictions on the patron's barcode when we create their account?

Yes. There is a maximum length of 20 characters for barcodes.
Whether other restrictions apply depends on whether your institution links the patron barcode to the username.
If the barcode and username are linked, the barcode is required, must be at least 3 characters, and may not contain spaces, parentheses, commas, semicolons, angle brackets, square brackets, single quotes or colons. Entering one of these characters produces a validation error at the point of entry. If they are not linked, there are no character restrictions and the minimum length is 1 character. In both cases, the barcode must be unique within your institution.
