I'm receiving the message, "the file format and extension of 'file name here' don't match. The file could be corrupted or unsafe. Unless you trust its source, don't open it. Do you want to open it anyway?" when opening a report emailed to me by OCLC Usage Statistics

Symptom

  • I'm receiving the message, "the file format and extension of 'file name here' don't match. The file could be corrupted or unsafe. Unless you trust its source, don't open it. Do you want to open it anyway?" when opening a report emailed to me by OCLC Usage Statistics in Microsoft Excel.

Applies to

  • Usage Statistics

Resolution

If you are receiving an expected report from Usage Statistics, it's okay to click "yes" and view the report in Excel. This error message is expected and is popping up because OCLC exports reports from Usage Statistics in an older format of Excel in order to ensure as much wide-reaching compatibility as possible.
