ILLiad is getting a Microsoft Edge error

Symptom

  • An error message appears after the ILLiad loading screen that says "We couldn't create the data directory" and "Microsoft edge can't read and write to it's data directory:"
  • The error happens whenever WebView2 would be used, such as the Policies Directory or an addon.

Applies to

  • ILLiad

Resolution

Previously, if a staff username had a space after it, there this did not cause any problems for ILLiad. Updates to the Windows operating system are causing issues with the reading of app data and folder naming. For example, the error may say that the directory is something like "C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\ILLiadClient\username \EBWebView" and we can see the extra space may be causing an issue.

The current fix is to delete and recreate the user without the space in the username:

  1. Log into the Staff Manager
  2. Create a new user that has the same username, except there is no space at the end
  3. Click on your old account and use the "Copy Permissions" and "Copy Layouts and Grid Settings" to send that information to the new account
  4. Delete the old account
  5. Restart ILLiad and try again. If the error persists, contact OCLC Support.
