"Unable to edit this item in the Text view editor" error in Circulation

Symptom

  • You are trying to edit item records in the Circulation tab of WMS and you receive an error reading: "Unable to edit this item in the Text view editor; please go to the MARC21 editor. The record contains fields that are not supported."

Resolution

Something needs to be changed in the local holdings record (LHR).

  1. Locate the LHR in Record Manager and select Record > Validate. If there are validation errors, correct them and save the LHR.
  2. Try to make your edits in the Circulation tab. If it still doesn't work, proceed to step 3.
  3. Sometimes this can happen if the LHR has multiple 876 fields, each with its own barcode. While the 876 field is repeatable in Record Manager, and thus the LHR validates, it can cause an error in Circulation. The LHR either needs to be separated into two separate LHRs for each item, or it needs to be set to a multi-part item. You can update this in the Leader field of the LHR.
