Why are there fewer total results when truncating a search in Discovery?

Applies to
  • WorldCat Discovery
Answer

For example:

Sustainable (including related terms) = 1,923,269

Sustainable (NOT including related terms) = 1,669,309

Sustainab* = 1,301,425

In this instance, the explicit truncation is counteracting the automatic stemming already taking place in Discovery.
