WorldCat Discovery January release highlight
Now users can quickly broaden their scope when they receive no local results.
Planned enhancements to WorldCat Discovery
A January 2017 update of the WorldCat Discovery roadmap is available on the WorldCat Discovery Community Center. Consult this document to see what’s next for WorldCat Discovery. Plans for February – March 2017 include adding temporary items to course reserves, support for transferring course reserves data from WorldCat Local and more accurate links to e-resources using the WorldCat knowledge base.
Include Request ID with problem reports
When reporting an issue with WorldCat Discovery, it is extremely helpful to include the Request ID. The Request ID is found at the bottom of the screen on which the issue occurred. Including this information allows us to directly trace what happened on the particular request we are troubleshooting.
New features and enhancements
Streamlined broadening scope
In a recent webinar, we discussed relevance-related configuration recommendations for WorldCat Discovery. One recommendation was to set your default relevance setting to “Relevance Only” with the default library scope set to your local library.
In discussing the pros and cons of this solution, we mentioned that users may be more likely to retrieve no results when limiting results to their local library. This is a challenge because some users may want to find locally-available resources. To help users more easily find the items they need, the service now enables users to broaden their search to “Libraries Worldwide” with one click when a search returns no results.
In the example below, a researcher found a known item after broadening a search to “Libraries Worldwide” when an initial search for locally-available items retrieved no items:
We will continue to refine the WorldCat Discovery search experience to help searchers find and get the resources they need as quickly and easily as possible.
This is a list of new databases added to WorldCat Discovery, WorldCat Local and WorldCat.org since our last update.
You can enable these databases as search options in the Licensed Content and Databases module of the OCLC Service Configuration site. Please remember that your library must have a valid subscription to these databases in order to enable them.
The complete list of databases is available at https://www.oclc.org/content/dam/supp...ttargetID.xlsx
